Never owned one, but know folks who have or do. I've heard from 8 to 16. Expect around 12, give or take a couple. Not much for fuel mileage, but those 390s will about pull your house. If fuel mileage is more important then power, buy an older truck with a 6 cylinder. My old Ford f100 gets 18 or so with a 240 6. Won't hardly climb a mountain pass in fourth gear empty though. And the roads around here are all 50 or 60 MPH, that helps MPGs, these older trucks weren't designed to do 70+ and higher speed will take a toll on fuel mileage.
I would think a Dana 44 up front and a Dana 60 in the rear, that's what a 77 ford f250 super camper special had anyway. That's correct. - JT owner 1979 f350 crewcab

The 77 Trans AM was built before ratings were required. The 455 cid engine got 11 or 12 when run moderately hard and could get 18 mpg when run gently.
If you can find a '77 repair manual it shows how to do it. I did it and it was difficult. Seems like started under the hood first and it comes out under the dash, so have to take off the ducting.

my 77 f250 351m passed smog with flying colors. i started with a truck that had been stripped of all smog components i used the vac diagram from a 77 f100 auto trans even though mine is a manual trans because of its simplicity. try to get the diagram your smog shop has. if they dont have one or dont have a good one then use this one. the shop manager at a very old ford dealer told me that if the smog guy cant prove you wrong then you are right. i have this diagram and am happy to share it because it was shared with me and was a great help.
