There is no single muscle.
Even in terms of a simple jab, there are many different muscles involved. To point out some of the basic muscles involved; the muscles around your hand and at the base of your forearm allow you to bunch your fingers into a fist, your triceps (at the back of your arm) extend your arm, your pectorals bring the arm across, and your deltoids around your shoulder provide strength and control, not to mention the many muscles around the torso allowing you to twist your body into the punch.
Isn't the human body just amazing?
A muscle becomes shorter when it contracts.
So his head doesn't get hit by the punch thrown by his opponent...
When a muscle contracts, it shortens in length.
A muscle that contracts shortens whereas a muscle that relaxes lengthens.
When a muscle contracts, it pulls with a force generated by the muscle fibers contracting and shortening.
When one muscle in a pair contracts the other expands.

When the bicep contracts the triceps relax
