The diaphragm and intercostals for breathing
Well your heart is used for breathing it's a cardiac muscle by the way :-()
There are several muscles that are responsible for breathing. They are the Diaphragm, the external intercostal muscle, and the internal intercostal muscle.
Your resting cardiac out put is about five liters per minute. During the exercise the cardiac out put increases from five liters to more than twenty five liters per minute. Muscles get about twenty liters of blood per minute. The heart has to beat faster to provide this extra blood. Faster breathing provide the extra oxygen, that is needed for the metabolism of the muscles.
External intercostal muscles are the ones between the ribs that help elevate them during inspiration.
Because your muscles need more oxygen, hence you hyperventilate.
During CPR, the chest compressions are applied; during rescue breathing there are no chest compressions used.
