They basically saved rock-n-roll from going out of fashion. Chuck Berry went to prison, Buddy Holly died in a plane crash, and Elvis Presley went into the Army. Rock had been languishing ever since. Their example inspired a generation and more of bands and musicians.
Firstly with Elvis. Then it went really global with The Beatles.
They set the stage for all of the American rock bands, by progressing the style of rock and roll. At first American was not partial to them, but after the song "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was released, America went through what was called Beatlemania (their crazy popularity).

Sister Roseta Tharpe is known for being a gospel singer in the 1930s and 1940s. She went into another genre of music , which was unheard of at the time. She is also known as the Godmother of Rock and Roll.
In the depression, many many people were very poor. Some of them just to pass the time, or to collect tips, or just to make themselves feel better, made up a new music called "blues." Blues music got more popular as time went on, and when new technology developed like electric guitars, and other things, blues slowly changed into something similar but different, and rock and roll slowly became what it is today. Rock around the Clock by Bill Haley and His Comets is the best known But at this time, there were songs around before that have used the term Rock and Roll. It is well known that Elvis went to see Bill Haley perform. Anyway yeah it is kinda hard to answer but I do believe that Rock around the Clock is the widely accepted first Rock and Roll hit. Most Rockabilly like Elvis and Carl Perkins was regional at first.
Elvis played gospel songs, the blues, and a country(he used an acoustic guitar) so he wasn't really the king of rock and roll when he didn't play much.
