That is a device that is inside the computer. An internal hard drive, for instance, is physically mounted inside the computer. It is not made to be used outside the computer, though there are kits to convert internal hard drives into external drives. There are external storage devices that are made to plug into a USB port. External devices either require their own power supply, or they get power from a USB socket. Internal devices get their power from the power supply which is already in the computer.

The power supply. It is a Switched Mode Power Supply Unit. SMPSU. It provides three types of voltage at differing amperage capacities, from the mains supply. 5v Heavy duty +12v light duty -12v light duty. The wires are color coded as to what voltage they carry and end in plugs which attach to the various hardware inside the cabinet.
Water is a power supply because it is used in power plants. The water is inside the boiler and the boiler is heated to make the water turn into steam. The steam is what makes the power.

In order to supply power supply to your computer you would need an outlet plug near your computer. Then you can plug your computer into that and necessarily, use an extension.
I'm sure someone can elaborate on this answer but there is a major aspect of safety involved if you are taking a computer power supply apart, that being the large capacitors inside hold a substantial amount of charge that are enough to give you a nasty shock, so you should drain the power from them before you go poking your fingers inside. Of course you would never do it when the power supply was switched on!

An internal power supply is usually a battery. An external power supply means the electric current that you get by plugging your device into a wall outlet. If you do not have to plug it in, then it has its own power supply inside the actual device, in other words, it is internal. Aside from a battery, it could have photovoltaic cells to generate power, or other internal sources of power, anything other than an external source.
The power supply that you replaced the old one with might have a louder, faster fan inside. Also, your last power supply could have broke down due to it's fan being shot and it wasn't operating at all.
