Nothing in particular as a region. In 18th and 19th centuries Cornwall (in SW of England) had dozens of tin mines and produced most of the world's tin - and probably the best!

Because we did not use as much tin as we mined so the value of tin dropped and people did not want to work in the conditions

Cornwall WAS rich in tin but there isn't much left now and most of the mines have closed.

It was not unusual for a son to follow his father and grandfather into the mines. In some areas, the only source for employment was in the local (tin, copper, coal) mines and (stone, slate) quarries.
