Cornwall WAS rich in tin but there isn't much left now and most of the mines have closed.

It was not unusual for a son to follow his father and grandfather into the mines. In some areas, the only source for employment was in the local (tin, copper, coal) mines and (stone, slate) quarries.
The UK has a history of coal mines and tin mines although most are now closed, in Cleveland there is still a potash mine and we also have a long history of treacle mines. (see related link)
Steam engines were first used in the tin mines of Cornwall, England to pump water from the mines which often extended out under the Cornish coastline.
