The surname Foy hails from several countries: Ireland, England, Franc, Gaul and Normandy which share a history of invasion by the Northmen. It means "faith" in Old French.

It is thought by some to be a derivitavive of the Norse term for "Black as the Raven", referring to dark or black hair the color of the raven that sat on the shoulder of the Norse god Odin.

About 300 AD St. Foy, a thirteen year old born in Gaul, was put to death for her Christianity by Rome. The Cathedral of Ste. Foy (Sante Fe- Spanish), is in Conques France in the Midi-Pyranees. Her statue and Cathedral survived the 100 years war and the Revolutions in France.

During WWII the town of Foy in Belgium was a critical piece to the allied victory during the "Battle of the Buldge".

The battle of Sainte-Foy, South of Quebec in Canada, was the last French victory in the "Seven Years War".

Foy is also the name of a hamlet and civil parish located in Herefordshire, England, north of Ross-on-Wye.
