Wohl is from the Eastern European Jewish culture (Ashkenazim) and derives from the Germanic word wohl, meaning "wellbeing." Because Jews in eastern and central Europe began to use surnames only during and after the Napoleonic era, and often as a government requirement, the name was probably an artificial selection and may have been provided by a government official.
