Nationalism was a positive feeling and drive in the 19th century when nation-states were formed and campaigns were started to become independent. Later, in the 20th century nationalism became a back of agressivity against other nations, and e.g. the Germans started to claim that their nation was superior and all the others were inferior nations. So it became rather negative.
In the nineteenth century China was rich in various products that more advanced nations wanted to import. Since China did not have a strong central government or a strong army, it became the victim of imperialism. Nations such as Britain, France, Russia, Japan and the US made China a victim of imperialism.
England became interested in North America in the early 17th century. The nation was an imperial power and desired to expand with the least amount of trouble. North America was perfect for that.
The gold florin became the currency of Italy during the foreign invasions of the 15th century.

Imperial Japan grew as a world power during the early years of the 20th century. They were prominent and became members of the League of Nations after WW1. The territorial expansion of Japan was a deep concern for many nations of the world when Japan invaded China in 1931. The Chinese tried to defend themselves but the advanced military strength of Japan suppressed and annihilated Chinese resistance. Invading other countries is the reason for the concern of other nations.

Because it was for the first time in history in the 20th century that the world became aware of itself, through the media, of what a place it was. People became aware of foreign lands in a big way, people became aware of news events throughout the world. Although the Internet has revolutionised this now I didn't have Internet access in the 20th century, but I was far more aware of my surroundings than my forebears had had. Given that the 20th century has the two greatest global conflicts WW1 &WW2 which affected millions & millions of people is obviously significant. I am sure there are other important factors....
