Although Soviet Warsaw Pact countries (satellite countries) exported war material to North Vietnam (It was confirmed, US troops read the outside of the crates when they were captured in 1970 IN Cambodia...those nations were listed country by country over the military radio on the open net). Mostly consisting of small arms ammo and small arms, medical supplies, holsters, belts, canteens, etc.

The USSR provided MiG17 & MiG21 jet training for North Vietnam's pilots in the Soviets Union (training lasted about 2 years & the North Vietnamese pilot trainees had to learn to speak Russian). The USSR provided the NVAF with primarily MiG17 & MiG21 jets and SAM and other AAA defenses. Along with T54/55 medium tanks and PT76 ampibious light tanks.

The Chinese Communists (documented by the US Military on paper/verbal as "Chicom") provided MiG17 & MiG19 jet training in Communist China for NVAF jet trainees. Red China also supplied the NVAF with MiG17s and MiG19s. Chicom versions of the USSR T54/55 & PT76 were also supplied to the NVA.

Communist Cuba assisted training a group of NVAF MiG17 drivers to conduct air to ground (sea) attacks in 1972. Two MiG17's were specially fitted out with hard points to be mounted with 500 pound general purpose H-E bombs. The jet bombing of the destroyer USS Higbee and light cruiser USS Oklahoma City were the results of that aid. The Higbee suffered one aft 5" mount destroyed from a direct hit. The Cruiser apparently suffered minor damage from a near miss.

How many soldiers served in the North Vietnamese Army during the Vietnam War?

On 04 April 1995, The French Press Agency in Hanoi released partial information concerning casualties: That North Vietnam suffered approximately 1.1 million military dead and 600,000 wounded in 21 years of war. Some of these casualties came from AAA/SAM crews manning anti-aircraft defenses; as well as N. Vietnamese MIG pilot losses. 21 years of war, was not defined. Released figures from another source show: approximately 400,000 communists in South Vietnam in 1968, and 360,000 communists in South Vietnam in 1969. Data was COMBINED NVA/VC. The drop in figures from the high 1968 mark to a low in 1969, was most likely due to losses from the 1968 TET offensive.
