During the US Civil War, a war in South America began. It pitted three nations known as the Triple Alliance against Paraguay. The war began in 1864 and ended in 1870. The Triple Alliance nations were Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. Based on the alliance the war is called the War of the Triple Alliance or the Paraguayan War.
