The "dust bowl" was partially man-made through bad farming practices and partly a natural disaster in the form of a severe drought.

Other natural disasters during the Great Depression include:

1929

(USA) Tornado outbreak along the Appalachian Mountains from Alabama to Maryland in May 1929. A tornado that hit Rye Cove, VA is the deadliest in Virginia history. It destroyed a school, killing 11 students and 2 teachers.

(Canada) The 1929 Grand Banks earthquake snapped 12 submarine transatlantic telegraph cables and led to a tsunami that arrived in three waves, each 3 to 4 metres high, that hit the coast at 105 km/h (65 mph) about three hours after the earthquake occurred and destroyed many south coastal communities on the Burin Peninsula, killing 28 people and leaving 10,000 more homeless. All means of communication were cut off by the destruction, and relief efforts were further hampered by a blizzard that struck the day after.

1930

(Italy) Irpinia earthquake had a magnitude of 6.6 and caused 1,404 deaths.

1931

(New Zealand) Hawke's Bay earthquake remains New Zealand's deadliest natural disaster. It lasted for two and a half minutes and measured about 7.8 on the Richter scale. Nearly all buildings in the cities of Napier and Hastings were reduced to rubble. The death toll included 161 people in Napier, 93 in Hastings, and two in Wairoa.Thousands more were injured, with over 400 hospitalized.

1932

(USA) Deep South tornado outbreak struck the southern United States on March 21--22, 1932. The outbreak produced tornadoes from Texas to South Carolina, and as far north as Illinois. Alabama was hardest hit; the outbreak is considered to be the deadliest ever in the state, and among the worst ever in the US. Over 330 people were killed including 268 in Alabama alone.

1933

(USA) Long Beach earthquake had a magnitude of 6.4, causing widespread damage to buildings throughout Southern California. The earthquake caused an estimated fifty million dollars worth of property damage, and 120 fatalities.
