The Battle of Actium, fought in 31 BC, resulted in the defeat of Mark Antony and Cleopatra by Octavian (later known as Augustus). This victory allowed Octavian to consolidate his power and became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. It marked the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire.
Octavian and Agrippa defeated the forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra at the battle of Actium (in Greece) in September 31 BC. Antony and Cleopatra fled to Egypt. Antony won a battle in Alexandria in August 30 BC. However, there were too many desertions and he was then defeated. Believing that Cleopatra had been captured, he committed suicide. Cleopatra committed suicide in July 30 BC.
Octavian had both political and personal reasons to defeat Cleopatra. As far as the political reasons, Cleopatra was the enemy; Rome had declared war against her and put him at the head of the Roman army, so she had to be defeated. On personal issues, Octavian's sister had been married to Antony. Cleopatra seduced Antony away from his sister and their children. The insult to the family honor had to be avenged.
Cleopatra lost the war and her power due to a combination of factors. Firstly, her alliance with Mark Antony against Octavian (later Emperor Augustus) was unsuccessful, leading to their defeat at the Battle of Actium. Secondly, Octavian's forces successfully invaded Egypt and Cleopatra's forces, lacking support, surrendered. Finally, rather than face captivity and humiliation, Cleopatra ended her own life by suicide.
Cleopatra was an Egyptian Queen who in 30 B.C. committed suicide with her lover Antony, following defeat. Her's is a story of life and death and many books have been written on her. The latest are Cleopatra - The Last Pharoah by Prudence J. Jones in English, and Cleopatre Au-Dela Du Mythe ( Cleopatra-Beyond The Myth) by Michel Chauveau in French.
