The surrender was on April 26, 1865, seventeen days after Lee had surrendered. But it was not the last. Richard Taylor surrendered in early May the last remaining sizable Confederate force east of the Mississippi at Citronelle, Alabama, and Edmund Kirby Smith surrendered the Confederates west of the Mississippi in late May.
