I have found that it is only the knob! If you carefully pull the knob off you will see that there is a key slid in the stem. It kinda spreads and gets thrown off a notch or two. Unfortunatly, you must be very gentle with both control knobs. Try just swapping the two to verify that I'm right.
The blower resistor has a tendency to go out in these cars, it is a 15 dollar part and is located under the passenger dash. Requires some acrobatics to get to, but can be done by anyone with a will to do so.
