The nerve impulse is like a car traveling on the road. To get to the other side, the car has to cross the river. The car gets on a ferry boat, which carries it across the river. The chemicals that the axon tips release are like the ferry, carrying the nerve impulse across the gap.

Nerves....When the sensation ( external - came from outside the body; internal - came from inside the body ) is accepted by the receptors, the impulse is being made. That impulse travels through the nerve to the brain.Example: specialized cells - receptors in the human skin for the cold sensations are irritated by the cold weather. Those receptors change the polarity of their cell membrane which causes the activation potential ( electrical impulse ) which is then transferred through the nerve fiber ( ascending nerves ) to the brain.
