Why are Jesus' words contradicting?

Many times Jesus said "You have heard it said ... (and he would quote a passage from the Old Testament), but I tell you ..." (and he would give a new commandment. See Matthew 5 - bold italicized words below for examples). It would seem that Jesus is contradicting the prophets of old, but rather he is setting a higher standard which is indicated by his words in verse 20 which says "For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven." Apparently Jesus is correcting the false notion that God's standards are less than perfect, for he concludes his discourse with "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." Of course, no one but God can be perfect, but Jesus is addressing Jews who think they are good enough for heaven by their own righteousness. By setting a higher standard than they currently live by, Jesus is showing them their need for a Savior, who can impart his righteousness unto those who realize that "apart from him they can do nothing". (John 15:5)This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.
