Trench Warfare, fighting from a network of fortifications dug or constructed at or below ground level. It developed as a protracted method of warfare after the machine gunshad become the main battlefield weapon. During World War 1 (1914-1918), the machine gun's range and firing power made it difficult, if not impossible, for troops to move easily to new positions. Artillery fire by land forces also affected the ability to maneuver. Trenches were dug along battlefield fronts, and the resulting trench warfare created a stalemate that lasted for most of the war.
During World War I, new technologies of all sorts were utilized to overcome the problems of trench warfare. Poisonous gases, special "assault group" tactics, highly concentrated artillery barrages, and armored fighting vehicles (or, tanks) were just some of the new technologies used during the conflict.
It was the Machine gun.
One of the most important new weapons of World War 1 was the machine gun,. Its sweeping, rapid-fire spray of bullets was deadly and often made infantry advances terribly costly. To protect themselves from the machine gun's raking fire and from artillery bombardments, soldiers dug systems of trenches.

The primary reason for the death and destruction of the war was the Industrial Revolution. advances in technology led to the creation of new weapons, such as the machine gun, poison gas, tanks, and airplanes. Even though new weapons were created, military strategists had not prepared for their impact on battle plans. The combination of old battle tactics and new weapons led to trench warfare and stalemate.
The new weapons technology caused more destruction and casualties as well as ending trench warfare.
The machine gun caused trench warfare to be a necessity as 90%+ of the casualties of WW1 were from this weapon. The use of Napoleonic tactics against new technologies was disastrous.
The warfare in WW1 included new tactics and weapons such as; flamethrowers which were bursts of fire machine guns that killed millions, and replaced rifles barbed wire to block off trenches poison gas was used to choke the enemy
