Florida was the 27th US State. Because it had been a Spanish Colony and because of issues caused by runaway slave and the Seminole Indian Wars numerous other states got a jump-start in the process of Statehood. Maine, Missouri, Arkansas and Michigan, in that order preceeded Florida and Texas, Iowa, Wisconsin and California in that order reached Statehood within 5 years of Florida's entry. There was an eight year gap between Michigan and Florida's entry.
Today Florida is much more than beaches and Spring Break, Oranges, Disney World, Cape Canaveral, Sportsfishing, the Miami Dolphins and Little Havana. It was a hard sell to the US Congress as a chunck of pest infested, gator covered Spanish swamp that had to offer in the way of Manifest Destiny except as a missing spot on the jigsaw puzzle that would become the United States.
