Look for a sticker inside the engine compartment close to the radiator, it has some numbers and letters on it. Sometimes it says it on the oil cap. On a small engine it should be 10W-50, if the engine is a bit tired, you could use 20W-50.
If you have the right oil, the oil light should go out immediately as soon as you start the engine, if it takes a few seconds to go out (20 or 30 secs in cold mornings) the oil is too "thick" and you should use a thinner oil.
The first number in the oil is how thick it is when cold, there are 5 10 and 20, the second is how thick it is when hot.
There is also monograde oil (it was used on old cars, but not on modern engines) those were called SAE 40 or SAE 50. and they were always "thick".
The numbers are: (-14 +sq rt 190) and (-14 -sq rt 190) Check: (-14 +sq rt 190)+(-14 -sq rt 190) = -28 and (-14 +sq rt 190)*(-14 -sq rt 190) = 6
