A BMW 325 takes about 6 or so quarts of synthetic 5w-30. Do not use conventional oil unless you hate your BMW. You must use synthetic.
The 325 in that year has a TDC (top dead center) sensor on the flywheel that may have been dislodged. There is an inspection plate under vehicle that you can use to determine if that is so.
I have a 2003 Envoy. I get better gas mileage by using mobile 1 0w-40 oil. Use any oil approved to be a substitute for BMW longlife. I drive 32miles a day, 24 miles highway and 6 city. In bumper-to-bumper about 1/2 the time. I get 17mpg. When I drive straight highway I get 22.7-23mpg. I never get less than 20mpg on the highway.
There is a sticker under the hood that tell you what oil to use .

You can put a BMW 525 engine into a BMW 325. The motor mounts will need to be changed. The 525 engine motor mounts will not match the 325 engine compartment.
I have a 325ci and the owners manual says it uses 7 quarts (6.9qts to be exact) do not use any of those oil additives or it will screw your engine up.
