depends where you live (temperature).
If it's cold, run 10w-30
If its normal or warm 5w-30
Check at an autozone or other store, they have a database with every car's fluid specs. Also, your owner's manual if you have it. My 1998 M3 runs straight 30, but that's because i know how to do that safely.
6.9 Quarts
A 1997 BMW 328i uses standard 10w-30 engine oil. This provides a good balance of protection and heat dissipation for the engine.
BMW E36 service manual requires 6.9 qt of synthetic oil
5w-30 full synthetic
In the trunk
the 328i BMW if it is the M52 engine should be using 5w30 synthetic oil, same as the 2.8 Z3
on my 328i I had that problem, and found that the tube that held the oil dipstick was sucking air at it's base where it meets the engine.
A 2008 328i BMW transmission does not have an oil filter. Only motor oil casings have filters in them. The 2008 328i does have a transmission filter but not a transmission oil filter.
