Mechanical and Chemical Digestion is ongoing as food travels through the digestive tract. Once the food reaches the small intestine, it is broken down to simplest form and ready for absorption. Almost every nutrient digested is absorbed into the body through the walls of the intestine.
After passing across the mucosa epithelium, the water soluble nutrients flow into the blood capillaries of the villi for transport to the liver and then to all the body's cells.
