At one time some of the countries in Africa were part of the British empire. Now they are independent, but some are members of the Commonwealth of Nations, an organisation that has some of the old British empire countries as members.

Yes, very much so, though the British Empire does not exist any longer. Instead there is the Commonwealth, which is an organisation of former Empire nations who co-operate together to maintain the best aspects and principles of the former Empire without the more negative ones.
New Zealand didn't leave the British Empire, the Empire itself was dissolved through a number of changes following World War II. The Commonwealth of Nations is the successor to the Empire, albeit it is a voluntary organisation. New Zealand is a member of the Commonwealth.
