"pink eye" is a common term for a viral inflammation of the eye surface called "conjunctivitis".
It is a mild infection, and self-limiting (it clears up on it's own, usually in 72 hours). It is, however extremely contagious during that time. Best way to prevent it's spread is the same for any other viral infection: Good hygiene, and constant hand washing.
