The Vice president is important because he is next in line if anything should happen to the president. He is also the president of the Senate, and can cast a tie-breaking vote if he is needed to do so. But most of the vice president's duties are ceremonial. He is often sent to diplomatic meetings if the president cannot attend, and he may also be asked to represent the United States at a conference or special occasion. The vice president is also an adviser to the president: for example, when then-Senator Barack Obama was running for president in 2008, he was impressed with Senator Joe Biden's experience and knowledge of foreign policy, which Mr. Obama felt would be a major asset to any president.
