After they claimed the same land as the British there was a long fight called the French and Indian war. The British won so the French lost that land but in the end the French claimed Louisiana to Ohio.

When the Missouri territory came up for admission, Conress ruled that it could be a slave-state, on condition that there were no more slave-states North of the parallel that marked Missouri's Southern border. This 'line in the sand' kept the peace for thirty years.

Twas profitable for the U.S. to buy Louisiana because it contained New Orleans, one of the most profitable ports in North America, because it was one of the richest and largest agragarian areas areas in the world, and because the entire area was a gold mine of natural recources (not really for gold, but you get the idea)
