Though I have never experienced a dust storm in Australia, I have encountered a few minor dust storms in the Texas panhandle. They have a very distinctive smell. It's hard to explain, but if I had to define it, it would be musty.
Well most every state had been affected by the Dust Bowl but if you mean the actual storm has been in Tennessee it wasn't. The Dust Bowl was in 5 states: Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas.
