The generic code P0171 means System too lean bank 1
Possible causes are
Intake/exhaust leak
Air system
MAP/VAF sensor
Fuel pressure/pump
Injector(s)
HO2S (heated oxygen sensor).
The code for a P0171 means the system is to lean.Check for a vacume leak first. You could also have low fuel pressure or a bad O2 sensor.
I got the same error code on a 98 ford explorer. I have searched online, and the 1st cheapest step is to clean the mass air flow sensor. If that does not do the trick, get a new mass air flow sensor, then oxygen or 02 sensors could be bad. P0171: fuel system lean bank 1
If you get DTC code P0171 or P0172 then It could be Mass Air Flow sensor gone BAD. Clean it or repalce it.
Bank 1 sensor 1 lean Common causes: Vacume leak Exshaust leak near or before sensor. Cracked manifold, broken studs? Bad sensor, but not usually.
Bank 1 fuel too lean Probable causes: Vacuum leak at engine, bad intake gasket, exhaust leak before an o2 sensor, map sensor
It means system too lean, this is usually a vaccum leak, but could be a faulty MAF (mass air flow) sensor. This code is for Bank #1, right side of engine. I removed intake plenum and found oil in sparkplug tube and bad spark plugs. this fixed problem.
It means system too lean. The best fix is a trip to someone who has an OBDII scan tool so that they can accurately troubleshoot the problem. The Sportage is notorious for false sensor readings and bad DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).
Replace part, clear code and you are done!
P0171 is system too lean, P1476 and P0440 are related to an evaporative system leak, and P1582 is idle adaptation at limit. You either have a leak in a vacuum hose or evaporative hose or a bad leak detection pump.
The light is on because the ECU has detected a problem with the emission's system. Can it do damage to continue driving the car? Not likely if it appears to be running ok. But there is always that possibility. Have the computer scanned with an OBD2 scan tool. The code it retrieves will tell you what part is being effected. Not necessarily what part is bad, but which part is being effected.
bank 1 system too lean.translation : oxygen sensor gone bad, there are 2 of them. One on exhaust manifold and one on exhaust pipe near catalytic converter.Rule of thumb if one goes out the other one is going to follow soon. I would replace if pairs if money allows.
po343 is camshaft sensor 1 bad and po171 is bank1 sensor bad, in English po343 cam sensor is mounted on back of engine and hard to get to, the po171 is bank 1 o2 sensor easy to replace.
