John Cabot's ship, the Matthew, left Bristol, England during May of 1497. During this voyage he discovered Newfoundland and Labrador and several other outlying areas that eventually became part of Canada.
John (Giovanni) Cabot sailed for Henry VII of England three times. On his visit voyage, he made it to Newfoundland (which is currently part of Canada), becoming the first European in North America since the Vikings. The second was short and uneventful. The site of his single landing is disputed. but it is agreed that it was in what is now Northeastern America (namely Maine) and southeastern Canada. When the ship was returning, the were too far south and arrived in Brittany (next to Normandy, France) before getting to England. Cabot never returned from the third voyage. The same can be said of the sailors with him and his ships.
