East Indians arrived for Indentured labor in Trinidad. Most were poor indians who came to make a life for themselves. They were housed in Community Barracks and worked long hrs to earn small wages. When their time of Indentureship was complete, the cost of going back to India was often too high. Also, during their time, the started to grow family roots in Trinidad. with land plentiful, it was easier to stay, but a small piece of land and start their own life in trinidad, rather than go back to hardship in India
