Ernest Rutherford was born in Brightwater in Nelson, and was educated in Nelson.
He went on to become a well respected scientist both in UK and Canada. In the UK, he discovered that an atom consisted of a very small volume of solid matter in the nucleus, surrounded by empty space.
His two student assistants in this experiment were Hans Geiger, and Ernest Marsden, (also a New Zealander) both of whom went on to become famous scientists in their turn.
He went on to transform one element into another, the first time that this had been done in the laboratory.
Ernest Rutherford graduated from Canterbury College, which is now part of the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.
