Why might it be beneficial for the brain to be connected to the contralateral side of the body?

It is beneficial for the brain to be connected to the contralateral side of the body because of the position and connection to the brain that our eyes have. Since light from the right visual field strikes the left side of the eye and light from the left side strikes the right side of the eye, the connections (each eye predominantly connects to the same side of the brain though there are connections to both sides and information is transferred at the optic chiasm) allow visual information from the opposite side (both sides, but opposite is important for the answer) of the body to reach the brain. Being able to respond to information on the side of the body that the given hemisphere of the brain controls is key to an animals survival.

Can you give somebody your eye?

If you are talking about an eye transplant or re-attching an eye to someone else, you are OUT of luck. It isn't possible and it will always be. As you can see, the eyeball is connected to the brain. Once you cut the vein connecting the eye to the brain, the brain gives it off and the eye is disabled. If you recconect the eye back to the brain, it wont work because the eye is disabled and unable to see. You cannot see anything. Hope this helps.

Why do the optic nerves cross over?

Only half of each optic nerve crosses over. The eyeball is curved so that things in the left part of your visual field are being seen by the right side of each eye ball, i.e, the outer part of the right eye and the inner (nasal) part of the left eye. The images from the left side of the visual field are processed on the right side of the brain so the outer fibers from the right eye stay on the right side and the inner fibers from the left eye cross over to joint them and complete the picture.
