The cable used is a combination USB-Mini B cable, with a standard USB connector on one end, and a Mini-USB on the other that plugs into the MP3 unit. The MP3 player is recognized by the PC as an external disk drive or Flash Drive, and is given its own drive letter just like any external device is. You treat it just like any other external disk as well for dealing with files, though the player's file / folder structure is usually specific and can cause problems if not kept in place.
