Genesis 15:5 says "And He took him outside and said, "Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.". And He said to him, "So shall be your descendants be.". This is God talking to Abraham in the Old Testament.
To make Abraham a father of many nations and of many descendants.
God promised he would make him the father of many nations
The Abrahamic Covenant was a three-fold promise. First God promised to make Abraham a great nation by blessing him and all of his descendants and cursing all those who cursed them. Then God promised Abraham and his descendants all of the land Of Israel, which ranged from the Nile Delta to the Euphrates River. Finally God promised of to make Abraham the father of many nations, and to make decedents so numerous that they would be like the stars in the sky (uncountable).
Ther was no specific amount of acreage promised to Abram (Abraham) by God, but it was enough to have found a country. This covenant was for the land between the Nile river in Africa and the Euphrates river in what is now modern day Iraq.
many many light years, in fact your children's children's children wouldn't make it its that far =D
Jacob and Esau were his grandchildren. but also remember he was promised decendants as many as the stars, so.. technically we are all his grandchildren.. :)

The symbol of God's covenant with Abraham is circumcision, which was the physical sign of the covenant between God and Abraham's descendants. This practice was to be continued throughout generations as a reminder of God's promises to Abraham and his descendants.
God told Abraham to look at the stars one night. Then He promised to Abraham that Abraham would have as many descendants as the stars in the sky (that is a lot of descendants)
God promised Abraham and Sarah that they would have many descendants and that they would be the ancestors of a great nation. He also promised them the land of Canaan as an everlasting possession for their descendants.
Two declarations were included in the covenant.
