Phytoplankton are found in forms of algae and bacteria in the ocean. They are found in shallow waters such as continental shelves. Photosynthesis occurs in these areas because of the penetration of the sun. It provides homes for many marine species. The pelagic realm includes this area, as pelagic real includes all open water. This covers the intertidal zone and the Continental shelf.
