A summary of the rock cycle?

The rock cycle started with the molten rock that made up the early surface of planet Earth. When the Earth cooled the molten lava solidified into igneous rock. Igneous rock that cooled quickly (such as on the surface) formed smaller crystals whereas those that cooled slower (such as under the surface) have larger crystals.Over time the effects of chemicals, heat and pressure (such as from underground magma flow) can transform the structure of igneous rock. This change forms metamorphic rock.Metamorphic and igneous rock can be worn down by the effects of erosion. Acid rain, rain, wind, expansion and contraction of ice, earthquakes and other factors will wear down rocks to smaller pieces. These smaller pieces can be transported by landslides and water flows (at which time they can be eroded further).Eventually very small particles of rock are carried by rivers out to sea where they are deposited on the ocean floor. Over millions of years layers of rock particles are laid down in layers. These layers are crushed over time and squeezed both by the tonnes of water above and the rock layers. Eventually these particles are squashed together to form sedimentary rock.form igneous rock.As can be seen the rock cycle can now cycle from any rock type to any other rock type. The rock cycle will always be going on and on.

How is the rock cycle related to the law of conservations of matter?

The Rock Cycle is a beautiful process. Conversation of matter, off the top of my head, states that matter cannot be gained or lost, that all changes that happen to it in a closed system will always result in the same "amount" of matter. The Rock Cycle imitates this. There are three types of rocks: Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic. Igneous rocks are rocks cooled from molten magma/lava. Sedimentary rocks are deposited and cemented particles of rocks. Metamorphic rocks are the result of rocks under extreme pressure and heat. All rocks, will eventually, make other rocks. For example, molten lava cools to make an Igneous rock. It then gets weathered into small particles and carried away by an agent of erosion. The particles get deposited and buried along with other rocks. Over time, our rock particles get cemented into a Sedimentary rock. This process continues to happen in the area above it and soon, enough pressure from the rocks above it transform the rock into a Metamorphic rock. This rock we have now is completely different form the Igneous rock it started as, up to the point it does not seem like starting rock at all. From this point, the rock would be pushed down into the Earth's burning hot mantle and be melted into the magma that will soon start over as our original rock... beautiful indeed...

Why were the Bronx and Manhattan disconnected?

The Bronx and Manhattan were never connected. They have always been separated by the Harlem River, which branches off of the Hudson River, flows down over the top of Manhattan, and into the East River. However, there is a part of the Bronx -- the Marble Hill neighborhood -- that used to be in Manhattan. The Marble Hill neighborhood used to be on the northermost tip of Manhattan, just north of the Inwood neighborhood. The part of the Harlem River that flowed past Marble Hill was extremely narrow, making it very dangerous for ships to sail from the Hudson River to the East River via the Harlem River. So in 1895, a deep, wide trench was completed (called the Harlem River Ship Channel), cutting Marble Hill off of Manhattan and making it into an island. In 1914, the narrow, dangerous stretch of river that separated Marble Hill from the Bronx was filled in, making Marble Hill geographically part of the Bronx. However, to this day, the Marble Hill neighborhood is still officially a part of Manhattan, even though it's in the Bronx now. If you're interested in learning more about the history of the Marble Hill area, I have included a link to the Wikipedia page about the neighborhood.
