I am unsure what you mean by your question.

There is either an analog hydraulic computer inside the transmission called a valve body that makes the decisions or a Electronic computer that directs the transmission

ORYour teacher could be looking for "The manual Valve" or "Shift valve" or "Range Valve"

But at the end of the day the driver moving the lever shifts the gears.

Why is your 99 Subaru Legacy Outback AT Oil Temp Light flashing and shift hard?

Your At Oil light reports the condition of the transmission and its fluid. Some times this problem can be fixed by changing your transmission fluid and assuring that the levels are correct when you refill the transmission. We hope that this simple routine maintenance we fix the problem, but it might not. You could have a "burnt" or worn out Central differential in your transmission. This is the part that pumps your fluid throughout the transmission and thereby creates the pressure needed for your transmission to shift gears.

What causes the gears to go out in a 1990 Toyota pickup 4x4 and what do you look for to fix it?

I'm not sure how your gears are out but, on my truck with a 5spd manual transmission I had a problem where it became progressively more difficult to shift into 4th, then 3rd became a problem. I started dismantling the shifter and there was a plastic bushing at the base of the shift lever that had completely disintegrated. Couple dollars for the part at the dealership and it was shifting good as new.
