The first thing to be pointed out here is that you cannot change the actual compound formula at all. The compound has to be balanced ionically or have enough bonds if covalent. You can only change the number in front of the compound itself (this multiplying all elements in the compound by that much).
The numbers of elements, compounds, and formula units in an equation may be changed in the course of balancing an equation, but the subscript numbers within the formula of an element, compound, or formula unit may not be changed, and no new substances, including new atoms, may be added to either side of an equation involving only neutral entities on both sides. (In an ionic equation, new formulas may be added, but not new atoms, and in addition to the other requirements, the net electrical charges on both sides of the balanced equation must be the same.)

A chemical equation is defined as the short-hand representation of a true chemical reaction with the help of symbols and formula.A chemical equation is formed by reactants and products.Products of a chemical equation always follow after the arrow
A balanced equation has equal numbers of each type of atom on each side of the equation. The parts of balanced chemical equation are the reactants on the left side and the products on the right side.
It should have equal no. of atoms of different elements in the reactants and products. It should have equal masses of various elements in reactants and products.
The mass of chemicals consumed should be equal to the mass of chemicals produced. The number of atoms of each element represented in the reactants is equal to those in the product. Bonds are broken and reformed but the number of atoms is the same on each side.

Most chemical equations have a few standard elements (no pun intended). There are the reactants on the left side, the arrow showing the direction of the reaction, and the products on the right side. Sometimes, properties of the reaction such as the enthalpy is shown after the equation. Often times, especially in organic chemistry, there will be other compounds or parameters written above and/or below the reaction arrow to indicate what chemicals were needed to make the reaction occur.
