The Bar Mitzvah Prayer

My God and God of my fathers! On this great and holy day, I lift up my eyes to you in truth and sincerity and declare that my childhood has passed away, and I have become a man. It is my duty to keep all the commandments you desire, and I shall have to answer for my deeds on the day of judgment when you will requite me according as I have acted. I have been an Israelite since birth, but today I I approach you as I enter the community for a second time. I shall glory in your name by which we are called before all peoples.

And now, my father in heaven, listen to this prayer and supplication. Send upon me the abundance of your blessings, and pour on me the rain of your gifts and blessings so that my days may be filled with the richness of your delights. Teach me the way of your statutes. Lead me in the path of your commandments. Put in my heart to love and fear your name. Hold my hand, and do not let me go, so that I do not stumble on my way on which I am embarking for the first time today. Save me from the evil inclination, and put in me strength to observe your holy Torah and commandments, which, if a man does them, he lives through them. And all my days I shall cry out in a loud voice and not be ashamed: "Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is one."

Amen.

There is also a short blessing known as "Baruch sheptarani" that the father says just after the Bar Mitzvah boy has been called to the Torah.

It is essentially the father's declaration-of-release from any further responsibility for his son's wrongdoings.

The text reads:

Baruch sheptarani mei'onsho Shel zeh

This basically means:

"Blessed is the One who has relieved me from the punishment due to him."

The general term for the two readings that a Bar Mitzvah are the MAFTIR (מפטיר) and HAFTARAH (הפתרה). The Maftir is a small section of the weekly Torah portion or a special Torah reading that coincides with the present Jewish holiday. Maftirs are typically around 3-5 lines long, but may be as long as 17 lines on certain occasions. The Haftarah is a longer section from one of the other books of The Bible, usually a Prophetic Book, that accompanies the Torah portion because of a shared message. Haftarahs are generally much longer than Maftirs and are usually between 20-40 lines long.

However, the particular Maftir and Haftarah differs for every week of the year.

Nothing. The phrase is not used in Biblical hebrew. The Bible does distinguish between adults who are held responsible for their actions and children who are not. The Bible does consider that the dividing line between childhood and adulthood occurs around the age of puberty. The Mishna uses the phrase "bar mitzvah" to refer to an adult man, and the Talmud pins down the age of responsibility to age 13, but not using the phrase "bar mitzvah" to do so. It wasn't until the 14th century that the phrase "bar mitzvah" was clearly used in the context of a celebration of a boy turning 13.
