Paul Revere is the best known. However, on his ride to alert the Minutemen on the morning of April 19, 1775, he was accompanied by William Dawes and by Dr. Samuel Prescott, who they encountered on the way. Revere was captured by British soldiers but was released as the general alarm was given.

Two men. Prescott and Dawes. The myth of Paul Revere comes from a poem written by Longfellow in 1861 to try to remind people of the founding of the United States. This was on the eve of the civil war and he wanted people to think about the common roots of the nation. Somewhere along the line the poem as been converted into history and was even put into history books as fact. Revere did start on the ride ( he was also paid 30 shillings), but was arrested between Boston and Lexington and his horse taken from him. So, he never finished the ride.

The British troops first movements were first noticed by Dr. Joseph Warren on April 19, 1775. This man alerted two men: Paul Revere and William Dawes, leading members in the Boston Sons of Liberty. These two men rode the countryside warning everyone they passed that "The Regulars are out!" (The British are coming).
