Art can be considered modern as early as 1900, but it is more of one's personal opinion when art may be modern. However, 1900+ is a good starting date on when it might be stated as modern.
The Phoenicians traveled and traded throughout the civilized Mediterranean Sea. As they dealt with many different peoples who spoke many different languages it was difficult to communicate. The Phoenicians developed an alphabet developing the first written language to record their trades. It is disputed that they invented the alphabet but they did spread it's use throughout the civilized area they traded in. Other people such as the Greeks took this alphabet and improved it for further use. The widespread area where the Phoenicians traveled gives them credit for invention of the first alphabet. They traded everywhere that there were people they could trade with.
That would be claimed by several different peoples today - Athens or Rome, take your pick.
The Phoenicians practiced a polytheistic religion that worshiped deities such as Baal, Melqart, Astarte etc. Since they did not believe in the Judeo Christian God, they would be called "pagans" by our terms. So the proper name of the Phoenician religion would be called "Punic paganism".However the Carthaginian descendants of the Phoenicians in Roman era North Africa would eventually convert to Christianity. And later in the middle ages they would convert to Islam when the entire North African Barbary region was islamisised. So modern day descendants of phoenicians are now predominantly muslim.
Because there was not enough land to grow crops to feed all of the Phoenicians, they had to turn to the sea for trade. So they mostly used ships for transportation. I would have to guess that on land, they would just walk.
