If you are a vegetarian it is important to combine multiple types of non-animal protein sources to get all the essential amino acids, as non-animal proteins are not complete proteins. Animal proteins contain all the essential amino acids. It is recommended the average adult consume 0.8 to 1.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. To determine your weight in kilograms, simply divide your weight in pounds by 2.2. For a 160 pound male, he should be consuming about 73 grams of protein each day (160/2.2 = 72.72 x 1 gram = 73 grams). Athletes should consume closer to 2 grams per kilogram of body weight. To give you an idea of what eating 73 grams of protein might look like. Breakfast could include a glass of milk or milk in cereal, or eggs, then a snack of cheese and fruit, lunch could include 3 ounces (a typical serving) of fish or meat, a second snack of nuts and yogurt, and dinner with a serving of fish or meat/poultry.
