You do have a whole lot of different 1099-???? form available at the IRS gov website.

IF you do have a 1099-G in your hand for unemployment compensation income that your received in the tax year 2009 IF IT IS A 1099-G go to the 1040 tax form page 1 line 19 Unemployment compensation in excess of $2,400 per recipient line 19 $$$$.

For the 2009 tax year ONLY take the amount from the 1099-G box 1 $$$$ and subtract 2400 then enter that amount of $$$$ in box 19 as the taxable amount of unemployment compensation that you received in the year 2009.

What about the 940

Go to the IRS gov website and use the search box for Instructions for Form 940 (2009) What's the Purpose of Form 940?

Use Form 940 to report your annual Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) tax. Together with state unemployment tax systems, the FUTA tax provides funds for paying unemployment compensation to workers who have lost their jobs. Most employers pay both a federal and a state unemployment tax. Only employers pay FUTA tax. Do not collect or deduct FUTA tax from your employees' wages.

The FUTA tax applies to the first $7,000 you pay to each employee during a calendar year after subtracting any payments exempt from FUTA tax.

These instructions give you some background information about the Form 940. They tell you who must file the form, how to fill it out line by line, and when and where to file it.

Unemployment Insurance Benefits are considered income for federal and state tax purposes. If you have received unemployment benefits in 2010, you will receive Form 1099-G which you should file with your tax return this year. See related links for more information about the 1099-G form.

Do you file a schedule c with your 1099G?

If the payment reported on the 1099-G somehow relates to a business you are running, then yes. But the most common use of Form 1099-G is to report state tax refunds or unemployment compensation. These would not be reported on Schedule C.

Can you file a tax return with just unemployment benefits as an income?

Not only can you file a tax return with just unemployment benefits, but in some cases you have to. Unemployment benefits are considered income, and as long as your income is greater than the filing threshold, you have to file a return. For 2012 the filing thresholds are $9,750 for single filers and $19,500 for a married couple. You should get a 1099-G [Certain Government Payments] summarizing all of the benefits you received throughout the entire tax year.

Do you have to file unemployment taxes this year?

If you got unemployment in 2012 you do have to file taxes if you didn't have the taxes taken out of the unemployment you received.

Do I need to file a tax return?

It depends on how much you earned in the tax year and your filing status. These determine your tax bracket. For instance, in 2008, if you're married but filing separately, you have to file if you earned at least $3,400. However, if you're single, you only have to file if you earned at least $8,750. You can calculate your estimated tax by using a tax rate schedule. I have a 1099G from unemployment - 353.00 - I also have a 1099 from Social Security Benefit - 7, 152.00 - Totalling $7,505.00. No taxes were taken out of my unemployment check. I was wondering if I had to file because of the unemployment I received. I file single.

What tax form do you use if you had unemployment benefits in 2008?

Unemployment benefits are reported to you on Form 1099-G (Certain Government Payments). If you had unemployment benefits, you can file any of the 1040 series. Form 1040EZ is Income Tax Return for Single and Joint Filers with No Dependents. It's the easiest form. If you're single or married filing jointly with no dependents and your only source of income was unemployment, then you should file Form 1040EZ. Depending on the complexity of your situation, you may need to file either Form 1040A or Form 1040. For 2008 unemployment benefits, you enter the full amount from line 1 (unemployment compensation) onto line 3 of 1040EZ or line 13 of 1040A or line 19 of 1040. For 2009 returns, report the amount in box 1 of 1099-G that is in excess of $2,400. In other words, $2,400 of your unemployment benefits are excluded from your income, and therefore from tax, for 2009.
