To be honest, this percentage thing is plain BS used by many to justify discrimination and hate. On the other hand, "Mexican" is a nationality, not a specific ethnic group; in general terms, the majority of Mexican people are the result of interracial marriages between Native Americans and white Europeans, but genetically speaking, they could belong to several ethnic groups; many of them may surprise you.
A living example of this statement is George Lopez, a popular Mexican-American actor who was born in the United States (he is American by virtue of birthright), but his genetic composition includes 55% white European, 32% Native American, 9% Eastern Asian and 4% African. Is he European? Native American? Mexican? (he wasn't even born nor has visited Mexico ever!)
