The last year I have figures for was 2003 and it was 7.3%. By 2005 that had dropped to just 6%. In 2010 it was back up to 7.7% but the trend is clear. The manual transmission may very well go the way of the VCR.

In 2010, about 44 percent of cars on American roads were of foreign manufacture. Japanese automaker Toyota sells more foreign cars in the US than any other company.
Rally racing is a sport where you race cars on roads. These cars are modified for racing and usually are not built to drive on roads legally.
cars are made to run on roads not on the ,the side of people Because there are laws saying you can't drive on the sidewalk!!
There are a few variables to factor in to answer that question. The most frequent percentage I found was that between 90 and 92% of cars sold had an automatic transmission. That percentage changes when you look at models of cars. You will find a higher percentage of manual transmissions sold in models that are more dedicated to performance and performance drivers such as sports cars. There are some models only available with a standard or manual transmission.
Cars might skid on wet roads because the water gets under the tires of the car. Then the cars don't have enough traction.
