The Regency. In 1811 George III was officially declared insane and his eldest son, the future George IV was appointed Prince Regent. He became king in 1820. Note that in architecture and design the term Regency (used as an adjective) covers a broader period, usually c.1800-30.
During the Heian Period, the Fujiwara family effectively controlled Japan's government through what is called a shikkenate. (Regency.) These Fujiwara Regents were the real power behind the figurehead Emperors of the time period.
The actual regency (when the Prince of Wales, the future George IV, stood in for George III, because the latter was insane) lasted from 1811-20. However. in architecture, furniture (and the history of morals!) often the whole period from about 1805-1830 is referred to as the Regency. It is generally associated with elegance, loose morals (especially in the Royal Family and the aristocracy) - and it also saw the early stages of the Industrial Revolution. Joncey

Georgian times covered from George I to George III, so from 1720ish to 1820. Regency is more specific, covering the later period of the reign of George III during his incapacity. His son (later George IV), ruled in his stead as Regent. Georgian and Regency chairs were not INVENTED as such. The term describes a styling and design influence from this period.
