How much will it cost to open a barbershop?

Start small and expect your first year to be slow (until you've established clientele). 6 stations should be fine (in Chicago 1 shampoo bowl is required for every 3 stations, you could try 4 stations 1 shampoo but check regulations for your city/state). If you're handy you would come out cheaper building your own stations ( I found 6 kitchen cabinets on Craigslist for 20 bucks each, 2 12ft countertops for 35 bucks each drilled 3 cabinets to each countertop spaced at 4ft apart and WAAPOW!!! 6 stations for under 200 bucks just ask grams where she purchased the wall mirror in the bedroom,, nasty) Advertising means alot so figure out if you wanna spend a couple hundred dollars on fancy flyers that may just and up on the sidewalk or the floor of your cities transit or if you wanna pay a couple of neighborhood preteens 15 bucks to post up a few hundred paper printed flyers you had made at Kinko's. (These may also end up in the city's dumpster a half a block over so be sure to use lil bro and tip well). Finally location. This is absolutely the most important part of establishing a successful barbershop. You can have the most skillful barbers working your shop but if your shop is located in the middle of the Sahara desert then what does it matter. Be sure to find a street where foot traffic is as high a motorists movement. Parking should be somewhat available either on or off street. The neighborhood you choose should fit the style of the shop. I mean don't set up downtown next to wall street and have big homie Ray Ray trying to solicit cuts with his black power boxers exposed to the world. That's cool if that's your thing but we're talking about making money now. Its a business so look the part, be professional. Try not to setup within a few blocks of other shop unless you think you're just that spectacular and definitely don't setup within a couple miles of a barber school. (cockyness set aside, I had been cutting 10+ yrs before going to school for license (I'm only 26) so please don't think you can't get a 25 dollar haircut for 8 bucks at a school). Anyway to actually answer the question I figure 10,000 dollars to start up in the Midwest area but it would definitely very. You figure east coast to down south would definitely differ based off the cost of living. Whatever you do be sure to research before jumping head in. Also remember that we have a profession that isn't easily taxed by the government, damn there impossible to guess with accuracy, so its important that you do it all by the book because the government is definitely looking for those reasons to make you pay. For real.

What supplies do a barbershop need to run their business?

Opening a barbershop or even a salon can be a challenging job. There are many rules and regulations governing the industry usually set by the state boards and by the city codes and ordinances. Many cities have barbering educators who are licensed to teach in their shop or school and who have a wealth of knowledge of what's required in your city to be able to run a violation free shop. They typically love the business and love talking about it. If you can seek out their support you will have an advantage in getting started. Now lets talk about learning the old fashion way and researching it yourself by reading the rules and regulations. The best sources for finding information regarding specific requirements is from your State Boards or Regulatory Commission. But you still have to deal with your city or town building and occupancy codes to get a "C of O" approval (Certificate of Occupancy). We have compiled an alphabetical list by States and their web addresses related to the regulation of barbering and cosmetology. Remember each state requires different things but some important safety items have been a Sharps Container (used razor blade disposal), certificates / licenses displayed and have on file a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for every chemical you use.Lets start with the Basics or MUST have items:• A shampoo sink / chair combo with hot and cold running water• A styling chair, all purpose chair or barber chair, one per person• One hand held or hood dryer with or without the chair• One work station (wall mount, stationary), per person• A disinfectant container with disinfectant or sterilizing solution• Seating accommodations in reception area• Cabinet for clean towels and supplies• A receptacle for used towels• Reception Desk• Floor Mats• Child Booster SeatThe best places to get the information you need on the equipment requirements for a Salon or Barbershop is your local Chamber of Commerce and your state board. The following links are to all of the State Boards:Alabama www.aboc.state.al.us/Alaska www.commerce.state.ak.us/occ/pbah.htmArizona www.cosmetology.state.az.us/Arkansas www.arkansas.gov/cosCalifornia www.barbercosmo.ca.gov/Colorado www.dora.state.co.us/barbers_cosmetologistsConnecticut www.ct-clic.com/Delaware www.dpr.delaware.gov/boards/cosmetology/index.shtmlDistrict of Columbia www.asisvcs.com/indhome_fs.asp?CPCAT=2009STATEREGFlorida www.myflorida.com/dbpr/pro/cosmo/cos_index.shtmlGeorgia www.sos.georgia.gov/plb/cosmetology/default.htmHawaii www.hawaii.gov/dcca/areas/pvl/boards/barber/Idaho www.adm.idaho.gov/Illinois www.idfpr.com/dpr/WHO/cosmo.aspIndiana www.in.gov/pla/2302.htmIowa www.idph.state.ia.us/licensure/board_home.asp?board=cosKansas www.kansas.gov/kboc/Kentucky www.kbhc.ky.gov/schools.htmLouisiana www.lsbc.louisiana.gov/Maine www.maine.gov/pfr/professionallicensing/professions/barbers/index.htmMaryland www.dllr.state.md.us/license/occprof/cos.htmlMassachusetts www.mass.gov/dpl/boards/hd/index.htmMichigan www.michigan.gov/cosmetologyMinnesota www.bceboard.state.mn.us/Mississippi www.msbc.state.ms.us/Missouri www.pr.mo.gov/cosbar.aspMontana www.mt.gov/dli/bsd/license/bsd_boards/cos_board/contacts.aspNebraska www.hhs.state.ne.us/crl/mhcs/cosindex.htmNevada www.cosmetology.nv.gov/New Hampshire www.nh.gov.cosmet/New Jersey www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/nonmedical/coshair.htmNew Mexico www.rld.state.nm.us/barber_cosmo/index.htmlNew York http://www.dos.state.ny.us/lcns/professions/barber/barber.htmlNorth Carolina www.cosmetology.state.nc.us/North Dakota http://www.nd.gov/sos/licensing/Ohio www.cos.ohio.gov/Oklahoma www.cosmo.state.ok.us/Oregon http://www.oregon.gov/OHLA/COS/index.shtmlPennsylvania www.dos.state.pa.us/bpoa/cwp/view.asp?a=1104&q=432561Rhode Island www.health.ri.gov/hsr/professions/hair_barb.phpSouth Carolina www.llr.state.sc.us/POL/cosmetology/South Dakota www.state.sd.us/dol/boards/cos/Tennessee www.state.tn.us/commerce/boards/cosmo/index.htmlTexas www.state.tx.us/category.jsp?categoryId=9.3Utah www.business.utah.gov/business//starting.htmlVermont www.vtprofessionals.org/opr1/cosmetologists/Virginia http://www.dpor.virginia.gov/dporweb/bnc_main.cfmWashington www.dol.wa.gov/business/cosmetology/lawsrules.htmlWest Virgina www.wvdhhr.org/wvbc/Wisconsin www.drl.wi.gov/boards/bac/Wyoming www.cosmetology.state.wy.us/revised 5/16/08I hope I answered your question.
