Harriet Tubman died in 1913, but she is still an important figure in both black history and American history. Born into slavery, she later escaped and during the Civil War, she did important work for the Union: in fact, she was a spy and undertook a number of dangerous missions, during which she rescued and helped to free about 300 slaves. She was nicknamed the "Moses" of her people, since she led them out of slavery as Moses led the Israelites in The Bible. Years later, she was a passionate public speaker, giving talks about the need for women's suffrage ("suffrage" is an old word referring to "permission" for women to vote). She also advocated for helping the poor and the elderly. A very spiritual woman, we could say she possessed such qualities as being ethical, determined, compassionate, and courageous. After her death, she became a role model for many young men and women of color, in their fight to end segregation.
